Web Censorship Bill – Must Read
“A markup on SJC Chairman Leahy’s IP infringement bill was postponed late Wednesday, as staffers anticipated the chamber would finish legislative work and adjourn for recess before the hearing could commence,” says Politico.
A group of 87 prominent engineers who played critical roles in the development of the Internet have also voiced their objections to the COICA in a joint letter submitted to the US Senate Judiciary Committee.
“If enacted, this legislation will risk fragmenting the Internet’s global domain name system (DNS), create an environment of tremendous fear and uncertainty for technological innovation, and seriously harm the credibility of the United States in its role as a steward of key Internet infrastructure,” they warn. “In exchange for this, the bill will introduce censorship that will simultaneously be circumvented by deliberate infringers while hampering innocent parties’ ability to communicate.”

Remembering 9-11
“The day after the attacks, the American Folklife Center called upon the nation’s folklorists and ethnographers to collect, record, and document America’s reaction. A sampling of the material collected through this effort was used to create the September 11, 2001, Documentary Project. This collection captures the voices of a diverse ethnic, socioeconomic, and political cross-section of America during trying times and serves as a historical and cultural resource for future generations.”

Just the facts
With my last post you might wonder where can I get actual facts about all the stories I hear on the news and read on Internet blogs. There is actually a web site that does not takes sides and only reports the facts of the current new articles you hear and read. Based at the University of Pennsylvania, this site DOES report only the facts as far as I can tell. I have verified a number of stories they post and everything is above board.

US Government – Congress – rating = 0
The Pew Research center does all kinds of ratings about just about everything political, government, etc. Back in April they published an article the said our faith in the Congress and our government were at it lowest since back in 1994. In the article there a number of interesting charts to view. I know you don’t have to look at charts to know how poor congress and the federal government are performing, but take a look anyway.

Old Newsreels – preserved
Many years ago before everyone had nice LCD HD TV’s, things were a little different. Actually go back to the ’50s and the most common for of news other that TV (black and white only) were Newsreels. When you went to the Saturday Matinee at the theater you were presented with a Newsreel before the cartoon and the movie.
These newsreels have been preserved for all the younger generation and historians to review.
One of my favorites was from 1960 that showed the launch of a rocket that went from Florida 9000 miles to the Indian Ocean. It was a real accomplishment at that time. The following is a link to the newsreel for your viewing pleasure. View the newsreel here

A robot on your power lines
A company called Electric Power Research Institute has came up with a robot that scales power lines checking for trees to close and any obstruction that might cause the power line to fail. This could be a real boost in keeping power lines clean from debris and keeping the power on for us power users.

New search engine – duckduckgo Really!
I have just found a new search engine that now is my default search engine. Yes, I have moved from Google to duckduckgo.com for the following reasons:
1. It uses the Google API so it returns much the same as Google but with better organization and not dependent on Google ranking.
2. I feel that the revel-ency of the results is better than Google.
3. It does not save any of your search results or your IP address so your are searching in private and you don’t have to worry about search information been sold to advertisers.
Try it out for yourself, I thing you will be pleased. Oh one more thing, I did 3 shopping related searches and duckduckgo found better prices than Google shopping.
Click here to give it a try.
Update 6-27-2010, Gabriel Weinburg from Duckduckgo recently informed me that they do not use the Google API but use Boss/Bing API instead.

TV and Video choices now restricted
The MPAA has finally won the battle and now your choices for video contact on TV via cable will be limited. The FCC has succumbed to the high dollar lobbyist from the MPAA and has agreed to the “Selectable Output Control” (SOC) meaning that they, not you, can choose what can be recorded on your own TV. This is a sad day for consumer rights.
Michael Weinberg of Public Knowledge said “it is frustrating when somewhere like the Media Bureau of the FCC, which should be looking out for the public interest, accepts “because we want it, and we are studios” as a compelling reason to screw millions of Americans.”
“If this proves anything else, it’s that regulators have been bought and sold by the very industry’s they are suppose to regulate. If you didn’t believe it before, this case should add to a mountain of evidence that proves it. (Zeropaid.com)
